Bengali lawyer and scholar Mufassil Islam has left Islam after death threats

Bengali lawyer and scholar Mufassil Islam has left Islam, courageously describing his former religion as a mafia cult of death. This is significant, as Mufassil is well-versed in Islam and he used to actively defend it.

I debated Mufassil in 2013 in Trinity College Dublin, in an event organised by the TCD Theological Society. Despite our very different worldviews, we had a respectful dialogue about Islam, atheism, the Quran and Sharia Law.

In 2015 Mufassil spoke out strongly against Islamist terrorist attacks in Paris, after which he received death threats from ISIS sympathisers. These threats will intensify now that he has publicly left Islam.

After publicly leaving Islam with the video at the start of this post, Mufassil published this plea for people to become emancipated human beings. You can show support for Mufassil Islam on:

  1. Wow, powerful video and very brave move to leave so publicly. I hope he is safe.

  2. It would be great if we could help by making as many ACCURATE sub-titles in different languages as possible, particularly in the languages of the “Muslim world”, and offer those to him to upload onto YouTube.

I hope he will be doing a Bangla version himself.

  3. That’s one brave individual. As a former apologist, it would be interesting if he continues to advocate against Islam in debates etc., however I don’t know how much of a tradition Muslims have of debating “apostates”.

  4. He has stopped posting anything on facebook for a few weeks now, and before he was very active. Is he ok?! Considering the fact that he was receiving a lot of death threats, we do have reasons to worry.

  5. Seems like this individual (Mufassil Islam) likes to debate. But his comments are without any logic, and doesn’t have any concreate evidence to prove his comments, instead merely his own opinions that he tries to push down his thoughts and his understanding through his viewer’s throat. Instead of debating him, one should suggest him that perhaps he can go through the following link and try to debate some Muslim scholars who actually spent some time to define, perhaps has PHD and know what they are talking about. This individual (Mufassil Islam) will find 10s and 1000s of topics to debate on and prove his supremacy… All the best!

Mohsin Khan: Say (O Muhammad SAW): “We believe in Allah and in what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Ibrahim (Abraham), Isma’il (Ishmael), Ishaque (Isaac), Ya’qub (Jacob) and Al-Asbat [the twelve sons of Ya’qub (Jacob)] and what was given to Musa (Moses), ‘Iesa (Jesus) and the Prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between one another among them and to Him (Allah) we have submitted (in Islam).”
    Quran Verse (3:84)

  6. If the anonymous “A Viewer” says that Mufassil Islam’s comments are without logic and without concrete evidence then perhaps we could know what the comments are that he is criticising and why he asserts that they are without evidence. Just making an assertion is not helpful, it is no more than an insult.

You include a quotation from the Qur’an which is also nothing but an assertion and falls precisely into the category you describe. Saying, “We believe in Allah etc.” is without any evidence and is itself merely an opinion. Counter argument with argument, don’t just fire off a blank and then put the onus on the person you are arguing against to find arguments against himself.

Mufassil Islam was for a long time a staunch defender of Islam and knows his stuff. That is why he left it.

If you want to debate Islam then let’s get to the nub of the issue. If you are a Muslim how can you assert honestly that you bear personal witness that there is no god except Allah? You cannot see Allah, you cannot count gods, you have absolutely no evidence of his existence or the non-existence of any other gods and yet you assert that you are a witness to this statement. The same goes for Muhammad being the servant and messenger of this Allah individual. The kalima shahadat is a patent impossibility. And yet no one can be a Muslim unless they make that assertion with full conviction. That is the most fundamental pillar of Islam. Without that the whole thing collapses. You don’t need to have a PhD to work that one out.

  7. Hardly a scholar or well versed, he is quite rude.

The words good riddance comes to mind 🙂

  8. Where’s his wife and kids, I’m sure they didn’t support him after he left Islam.
And is there really a darker reason as to why he’s turned so hatefully against Islam, maybe because of his own undoing.

  9. Don’t blame him. You know who or what owns it. There are many more like him I’m afraid now rotting in Bangladesh jail; namely Asad Noor (22), Limon Fakir (20) and many more! They don’t had financial means to fight the Bangladeshi govt, who has joined radical Islamic group ahead of next general election!

  10. Hi,I am trying to contact Moffassil Islam. Can any one give me his email address?

  11. I was brought up without indoctrination in any religion, so I can see with a clear vision that is not available to those who were indoctrinated into any religion, that all religions are false. There is no evidence for the reality of any god or any supernatural being. Religions are more about politics than spirituality. My two pence worth.

  12. There is God, God has no shape or form. If the Universe is infinite, and there are multiple galaxies and universes that goes beyond imagination, how do you think you could imagine God into one single figure or structure? Why should your imagination fit in God, if God is so divine and infinite. And metaphysicists are saying there is God, because there is no beginning of time since there are millions of universes, so no one knows when did time begin, so time is infinite and an illusion.
So there had to be a God who started it all, there wasn’t a big bang that all started it. So possibly any religion that puts God into a shape or form is wrong? It doesn’t take a physicist or a phd to know all these, because I an none.
