Tough on ideas, supportive of people – my talk to the Irish Skeptics next week, Wed 4th March

by Michael Nugent on February 24, 2015

I will be talking at the Irish Skeptics’ first public lecture of 2015 on Wednesday, March 4th, on the topic ‘Tough on ideas, supportive of people – How atheist and skeptic groups can be robust, inclusive and ethical’.

Date and Time: Wednesday, 4th March at 8pm
Venue: Abbey Room, Wynn’s Hotel, Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1
Admission: €3 members and concessions €6 non-members

I will present a draft manifesto for ethical atheists and skeptics who care about both truth and morality and who want to promote reason, critical thinking and science; atheism over supernaturalism; natural compassion and ethics; inclusive, caring groups; fair and just societies; secular government; and local, national and global solidarity.

You should know more about the history of Wynn’s.

Best not to mention in it in your talk, but the place was notorious at one stage.

Yes the place is notorious for all sorts of events. Why, a friend of my family had her wedding reception there only a couple of years ago.

I can see why Michael wouldn’t mention that in his talk though, its hardly relevant.

Reminds me of how Peter Boghossian phrased it: “All people deserve respect, but not all ideas do.”
