List needs some Bad Religion – numerous songs to choose from. And lead singer Greg Graffin is an evolutionary biologist and wellknown naturalist/skeptic/atheist

Very nice list.
It made me go and upload a similarly themed (atheistic) song from some of our very own.
Irish (Dublin) hip-hop duo, Dusty Residents’ song ‘The Gospel Pt. I’ is definitely worth a listen.
There’s a ‘Pt. II’ also that I could upload if anybody is interested.

Here are two more for the list.
“Legion” by Theatre of Hate:

“Salt Lake City Sunday” by Fad Gadget:
http://youtu.be/Pvc8KXbNCBg?t=7m8s
(Sorry about this link; the only other version available on YouTube is of utterly abysmal quality, and sounds like it might have some tape bleed-through.)

The Cure is led by a pretty vocal atheist. I would throw in at least “Where the Birds Always Sing” and “Your God Is Fear.”

Thanks for this entertaining list!

I’d add “Goddamned”, by my favourite artist Jay Brannan:

Somehow he never makes the lists, but he’s more than earned his place with this one. If you like it, please buy it.

I also recommend Etta James’ cover of Randy Newman’s “God’s Song”:

You might like to add “Losing My Religion” from REM, really meanignful to my generation

Thanks for the list! My addition: Tombstone Da Deadman has a great album called Rise of the Infidel.

Great post Michael. Would be nice to make a playlist of these.

I have often thought that Games People Play by Joe South ( my fave version is Petula Clark) … had at least a hint of religious skepticism about it.

“…People walking up to you
Singing glory hallelulia
And they’re tryin to sock it to you
In the name of the Lord

They’re gonna teach you how to meditate
Read your horoscope, cheat your faith
And further more to hell with hate
Come on and get on board”

Thanks so much for taking the time to gather this list. I can’t wait to have the time to go through the ones I’m not familiar with. Here’s some atheist Gospel for ya…

Frank Turner – Glory Hallelujah
Brothers and sisters, have you heard the news?
The storm has lifted and there’s nothing to lose,
So swap your confirmation for your dancing shoes,
Because there never was no God.
Step out of the darkness and onto the streets,
Forget about the fast, let’s have a carnival feast,
Raise up your lowered head to hear the liberation beat,
Because there never was no God.

There is no God,
So clap your hands together,
There is no God,
No heaven and no hell.
There is no God,
We’re all in this together,
There is no God,
So ring that victory bell.

No cowering in the dark before these overbearing priests,
Not waiting until we die until we restitute the meek,
No blaming all our failings on imaginary beasts,
Because there never was no God.
No fighting over land your distant fathers told you of,
Not spilling blood for those who have never spread a drop of blood,
No finger pointing justified by fairies up above,
Because there never was no God.

There is no God,
So clap your hands together,
There is no God,
No heaven and no hell.
There is no God,
We’re all in this together,
There is no God,
So ring that victory bell.

And I know you’re scared of dieing man and I am too,
But just pretending it’s not happening isn’t gonna see us through,
So just accept that there’s an end game and we haven’t got much time,
And then in the here and now we can try and do things right.
Forget about the crazy things that people have believed,
And think of wondrous things that normal people have achieved,
‘Cos I’ve known beauty in the stillness of cathedrals in the day,
I sang Glory Hallelujah! Won’t you wash my sins away?
But now I’m singing my refrain and this is what I say,
I say there never was no God.

There is no God,
So clap your hands together,
There is no God,
No heaven and no hell.
There is no God,
We’re all in this together,
There is no God,
So ring that victory bell.

There is no God,
So clap your hands together,
There is no God,
No heaven and no hell.
There is no God,
We’re all in this together,
There is no God,
So ring that victory bell.

Great list! My computer’s AWFULLY slow, though, so I wish you’d just put in individual links, rather than 75 embedded videos!

Thanks, that’s a great list and some great ones in the comments too.
Heres some more I thought of:

“it aint necessarily so” by Gershwin, many covers, my favourite is Jamie Cullum: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4mbdOYT2gw

“banging in the nails” by The Tiger Lilies: http://youtu.be/cl3mqiKHx-E

“fuck the creationist” by MC Hawking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_k-MZcjCFI

“tomorrow wendy” by concrete blonde – although I think the cover by Broderick Smith is the best: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ezb4hh_St-o

“Pie in the Sky” by Joe Hill (no youtube for him of course, but Utah Phillips has done a cover): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJ236CwhlPw

“Judith” by A Perfect Circle in an in-your-face denial of religion, based on Maynard James Keenan’s mother Judith, who suffered most of her life from a debilitating disability.
